Why everyone, everywhere is wearing pearls right now

This year, people are up for bringing back classic vintage glam, and pearls have been appointed as the go-to accessory and embellishment, the biggest fashion events to hit India are just proof of that, just take a look at the NMACC red carpet rollout, or the iconic Dior show held at the Gateway of India.

It's no secret that the trends of the yesteryears are having a moment right now, with fashion houses opening up their archives and nineties minimalism making a comeback. And while the previous year revolved around all things whimsical and escapist — with the return of quiet luxury, fashion enthusiasts are ready to bring back sophistication to their usual uniform.

When you think of pearls — you think classic, vintage and timeless. After all, that’s what icons like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe immortalised — both on and off-screen. In fact, at the Dior Fall 2023 show in Mumbai, accessories played a huge role in putting together both the runway looks and the attendees’ style for the night before they switched rhythm for NMACC. While models in vivid silk, adorned with strands of pearls emerged from behind the magnificent Gateway of India, on the front row at the show were Karishma Kapoor, Simone Ashley, Khushi Kapoor, Athiya Shetty, Mira Kapoor and more — wearing various iterations of the classic staple.

Some of the most precious gems have the power to span generations and remain covetable for decades, and pearls fit firmly into that sartorial realm. It’s no secret that pearls are a royal favourite with the Duchess of Cambridge often wearing more modern styles, such as pearl droplet earrings from Missoma or Monica Vinader. Not to forget, Princess Diana’s iconic ‘revenge dress’ that featured a little black dress paired with a pearl choker.

Coco Chanel deemed the elaborate costume jewellery acceptable for everyday wear, and Hailey Bieber is taking that fashion code forward, effortlessly layering pearl jewels with a graphic shirt and oversized beige jacket. The accessory stands in contrast to an otherwise grunge outfit — putting together a balanced-out streetstyle look.
