In 2021, Victoria’s Secret made the announcement that it would be clipping its Angels’ showgirl wings for good. The brand (which came under increased scrutiny following the #MeToo movement) had been mired in various allegations of workplace harassment. But since undergoing a visual and ethical rebrand, the label has been plotting a “reimagined” spectacle to rival its once-iconic fashion shows.
Airing as a feature-length film on Amazon Prime later this month, The Manhattan Center in New York played host to a star-studded premiere last night. A pantheon of new and old faces walked the red carpet – among them Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, Gigi Hadid and EmRata – each one giving their own take on what an “Angel” might dress like in 2023. Priyanka Chopra Jonas opted for a nude-illusion column.
The traditional underwear-plus-stilettos formula seems to have died out and in its place a less provocative idea of sex appeal. Chopra’s dress – sheer and intricately spangled, revealing a high-waisted lingerie set beneath – was taken from Giambattista Valli’s autumn/winter 2023 collection.
