“The garment blends classic motifs with androgynous tailoring and punk-era influences with Kareena's ever-evolving style in mind,” says stylist Rhea Kapoor. For her appearance at a recent Bvlgari event, Kareena Kapoor Khan wore a custom look by Hannah Khiangte, a designer from Mizoram. The designer’s label specifically spotlights the intricate puan, working closely with Mizo artisans to carefully reinvent the historical garment. For this piece, Khiangte reimagines the classic silhouette by blending it with contemporary elements.
The sculptural off-shoulder is both structured and soft, with a dramatic corseted bodice that cinches the waist. Crafted in a deep navy, the pearl-coloured embellishments frame the gown while maintaining its steadfast sophistication. Inspired by puan fabrics, a wide band trimmed with a cream fringe edge references the edges found in the traditional handwoven textiles.
Around the bodice, which features vertical boning, Khiangte built strong architectural lines that shape the waist and torso. The accompanying skirt is crafted with an ankle-length front and a fluid train at the back for a more contemporary touch. Styled with Christian Louboutin heels and Bvlgari jewellery, Khiangte’s piece seamlessly blends craft and culture.
From Vogue’s fashion desk:
“To rewear it with a more forward slant, throw on a razor-sharp trench, oversized and worn open over the shoulders. Swap the pointed pumps for a pair of pointed boots in patent or cracked metallic, something that interrupts the romanticism. Pull the hair back into a low chignon with a wet finish. Add a single heavy cuff or an antique brooch pinned off-centre at the waist,” says Vogue India’s Fashion Associate, Manglien Gangte.
