They say ‘diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ but for Indians the saying goes something like ‘saris are a girl’s best friend’. It is nearly impossible to find a wardrobe that doesn’t include at least one sari and the ubiquitous drape often pairs best with the red carpet. Recently for Umang Police Show 2023 which was a star-studded affair, actor Bhumi Pednekar wore a sari that transported us back to the vintage era.

Styled by Tanya Ghavri, Pednekar wore a custom beige organza sari from Torani by Karan Torani with hand-embroidery in white for contrast that she paired with a matching short puff-sleeve hand-embroidered blouse with sweetheart neckline. She complemented the look with vintage-style Riveria sunglasses and the structured Mico bag from Prerto. Ghavri styled the look with a layered pearl choker featuring a studded sapphire in the middle. Pednekar opted to do her makeup herself and went for a soft glam look with nude lips and a glowy face.

The blouse in Pednekar’s look accentuates the vintage aesthetics of the ensemble during the colonial era. Historically, the saris were traditionally worn without the blouses but the advent of colonial era in India during the 17th century, brought the pairing of sari and blouse that we follow today. The whimsical puff-sleeves blouse which became popular during the Victorian era was one of the styles that influenced the blouse and had been sported during the 20th century by various community including the Parsis and the royals—particularly the short-sleeved ones like what Bhumi Pednekar wore.
