2023 turned out to be quite eventful for Deepika Padukone in terms of fashion, despite not being a regular at the red carpet events this year. Her latest appearance at the Umang 2023 Police Show left a lasting impression on fashion enthusiasts, thanks to the extravagance and glamour oozing out of her traditional ensemble.

For the event, styled by Shaleena Nathani, Padukone wore an intricately hand-woven Banarasi sari consisting of zari work on peacock-blue silk that she paired with a matching full-sleeved blouse— both from couturier Sabyasachi whose name has become synonynous with Banarasi thanks to his bridal lehengas and saris, sported by celebrities and on every bride-to-be’s list. She paired the look with a traditional gold choker and massive disc earrings, both featuring jadau work from Sabyasachi. Padukone’s makeup was kept soft and dewy, complemented by a low loose bun.

The jewellery added a hint of contrast to the dull zari on the sari. A closer look at the sari gives us a peek into the intricate botanical motifs running all over the sari in continuation without any disconnect and including multiple hues subtly, a design that has grown in popularity in contemporary times. The traditional Banarasi sari which remains a prominent wedding garment in North Indian stats like West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, has withstood the test of time and continues to be popular. The age-old craft of zari from Banaras originally required embroidery of gold and silver threads on the sari, and was preferred by the royals of ancient times. Sabyasachi’s take on the traditional technique popularised the Banarasi sari in Indian fashion landscape, with celebrities like Anushka Sharma and Deepika Padukone including it in their wedding ceremonies.
