From sky-high Kiki boots to bleached eyebrows, the model is full of red carpet surprises
Kendall Jenner was just 18 the first time she went to the Met Gala, and, rather appropriately for a fashion-conscious teenager in the 2010s, she wore Topshop. (Granted, Kendall’s was custom.)
How times have changed. A decade on, Jenner took up her spot on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2024 wearing a piece of fashion history: a Givenchy Haute Couture autumn/winter 1999 look designed by the late Alexander McQueen, who served as artistic director of the heritage house from 1996 to 2001. That night, she became the first person to wear the gown (the collection was presented on mannequins and never shown on the runway), which was returned to the McQueen archives once the party ended.
“I made a dream list of who I would ideally want to go with, and I would have died to wear something by Alexander McQueen,” Jenner told Vogue at the time. “It’s such a special moment. I feel extremely honoured.”
The chasm between that prom-ready Topshop number and her vintage Givenchy could serve as a rather neat metaphor for Jenner’s personal trajectory. When she first faced the cameras at the Met she was a relatively low-profile member of a wildly famous reality TV family. By 2024 she was the highest-paid model in the world, and in possession of more than enough industry clout to secure Lee McQueen’s archive couture.
Ahead of the 2025 Met Gala, take a closer look at those appearances – and all of the ball skirts, bodysuits and orange Versace feathers in between.
