From varsity jackets to cargo pants, 1990s tees, the cult Goyard duffel bag and signature exposed-thong silhouette—here’s how Bella Hadid’s supermodel style defined this year’s biggest fashion trends
Analysing the Bella Hadid fashion phenomenon (BHFP) is no mean feat. The supermodel exerts an extraordinary influence over worldwide fashion trends (most of which she sets in the time it takes to walk from her car to her front door), making her street-style appearances something of a year-round runway show for her dedicated fanbase.
In early 2020 alone, the 24-year-old’s wintertime Parisian wardrobe brought souped-up pinstripe suiting (full look Dilara Findikoglu, complete with logo chain belt), faux fur bucket hats and waist cinching princess coats, kickstarting countless Pinterest searches. There was the boxy, supersized black leather jacket—Hadid’s companion during a packed schedule of runway fittings at MFW in February—and the straight-leg skater pants that sounded the death knell for the ‘skinny’ jean silhouette. By early spring, the supermodel’s global following was hooked on her modern iterations of the golfing knit, styled with roomy leather pants, and her penchant for the exposed thong trend that went on to command the SS21 runways.
Beyond the signature rimless, cheekbone-framing sunglasses, ever-present gold hoops, Vivienne Westwood pearls and midriff-baring knits, the BHFP has the power to launch the careers of rising design stars and renew the authority of major fashion houses in the competitive gen-Z space. But, even more powerful still is Hadid’s influential style messaging on the positive possibilities of influence itself. In the latter half of 2020, her eye for blending vintage style references into her everyday look showcases the promise of a mood-raising wardrobe and the power to share a little joy.
Just as we were setting aside our post-lockdown sweatpants, Hadid was making the case for playful lemon-hued co-ords and dialling up the saturated shades of her birthday looks for her close-circle celebrations. She gave us a smoke-sheer Nensi Dojaka mood at the 2020 MTV VMAs and, most recently, has made a sun-faded 1970s all-pastels colour palette (together with hand-painted flares) the WFH style directive we needed.
And—above all else—she never ever forgets her mask.
This is your recap on Bella Hadid’s year in style, as seen on the street.
