The bling fever has been at an all-time high in the last couple of years. From Ananya Panday to Deepika Padukone at the BAFTAs in a beige glittery Sabyasachi sari, there is hardly a Bollywood celebrity who hasn't been spotted partaking in this trend at least once.
The most popular rendition of this ubiquitous trend includes a slinky lightweight sari that is occasionally sheer and paired with a plunging blouse. It was courtesy of couturier Manish Malhotra that sequins became a force to be reckoned with in India, when his evergreen muse, Kareena Kapoor donned his coral-hued bedazzling creation in 2019 before the release of his Maahrumysha collection.
At Rakul Preet Singh and Jackky Bhagnani's wedding actor Ananya Panday personified sun-kissed glow in an Arpita Mehta sheer creation. The outfit featured a sequinned layered sari, paired with a sleeveless bra-style blouse.
One of the first memories of a tiered sari in the Indian fashion landscape was '70s icon, Mumtaz in the orange sari for the song, Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche with Shammi Kapoor from the film, Brahmachari. The outfit, designed by costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, was the first of its kind and set the precedent for the pre-stitched and tiered saris department.
The well-loved tiered saris evolved over a long time to incorporate more elements like ruffles and sequins, which celebrities like Shilpa Shetty, Madhuri Dixit Nene, and Pooja Hegde included in their wardrobes. With the sari's ever-growing popularity and versatility, it is no surprise that Panday's whimsical look is another great example that easily bridges the gap between modernity and tradition, fun and formal.
